5/21/2023 0 Comments Mothered by Zoje Stage![]() The entire time I was reading I couldn’t definitively decide on the mental state of the main character Grace and I loved it! It was creepy, claustrophobic, atmospheric, and by the end my mind was twisted into a pretzel. The fallout from the pandemic is something everyone can relate to and the author captured this perfectly adding a supernatural twist. This book blew my mind! I eagerly devoured it in one sitting. As the walls close in, the ghosts of Grace’s past collide with a new but familiar threat: Mom. ![]() When Jackie makes an earth-shattering accusation against her, Grace sees it as an act of revenge, and it sends her spiraling into a sleep-deprived madness. And Jackie discovers that Grace secretly catfishes people online-a hobby Jackie thinks is unforgivable. Grace starts having nightmares about her disabled twin sister, who died when they were kids. Good intentions turn bad soon after Jackie moves in. And maybe it’ll be a chance for them to bond-or at least give each other a hand.īut living with Mother isn’t for everyone. Then again, she needs help with the mortgage after losing her job. They’ve never had a great relationship, and Grace likes her space-especially now that she’s stuck at home during a pandemic. ![]() Grace isn’t exactly thrilled when her newly widowed mother, Jackie, asks to move in with her. A claustrophobic psychological thriller about one woman’s nightmarish spiral while quarantined with her mother. ![]()

5/21/2023 0 Comments A place called winter review![]() I didn’t quite like the rather spoilt Domina Tey, yet I was intrigued what happened to her. ![]() I wonder if he’d be satisfied with that now.Įarly in his novel writing career, Gale nails the characterisation. There are a number of coincidences that happen that need to get the plot moving on. The writing reflects his apprenticeship, which is more clunky (you notice it getting in the way at times, a bit overwritten), and also the plot devices. Gale is a superb observer of people, right up at the top, and in Ease, this is no different. I enjoyed Ease hugely, but what I also appreciated is his development as a writer. Last year I read A Place Called Winter (and am eagerly awaiting the next), and loved it (reviewed here). She rents a bedsit in a Bayswater, and the story evolves around the characters she meets.Įase was written in 1985, Gales second novel. In search of a more gritty, anonymous existence. ![]() She leaves her husband, temporarily, for an escape in London. She’s living in the grey zone, stagnating in her life and creativity. According to the publisher’s information, Ease is “a novel about downsizing from a life of ease and upgrading to one of sleaze.” It is an attention grabbing description, but doesn’t do the story justice, and oversimplifies my experience of it.Įase tells the story of Domina Tey, a successful playwright, living in abundance in Bristol (Clifton to be precise), but she isn’t happy. ![]() ![]() A number of new or expanded footnotes are also included along with a Select Bibliography. ![]() ![]() Grube’s distinguished translations, as revised by John Cooper for Plato, Complete Works. It is also about what the engineers designed him to be and be capable of and what he actually is and is capable of. He is the leader of one of the first few multi-form squads, meaning teams that consist of more than one kind of animal/bioform. He combines canine senses with sentience, human DNA and then also got cybernetically integrated weapons systems. ![]() This book, then, is about Rex, a dog-like bioform engineered for war. ![]() It is also clear that the author doesn't consider animals to be "just animals" but sees them on the same level as humans if not even one above. Only recently I read Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time and it is clear from these two books that the author has a wonderful sense of bringing the thoughts and feelings of animals (sorry, bioforms) to life. ![]() I finished this late last night (has been a while since I stayed up so late to finish a book) but had to seriously ponder how to write this review. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments Dauntless by Dina L. Sleiman![]() ![]() Although I have not studied the crusades extensively, I feel like the author portrayed a worthy cause for the mission in this book. Eventually, I plan to go back and read Chivalrous when I have a chance. The author researched the time setting and culture and she explains some of her writing decisions in her historical notes at the end of the book. I recognized a few of the characters from Dauntless and I know several of the characters were also in Chivalrous. The characters are believable and diverse. This book has action, suspense, emotion, miracles, and a hint of romance just like Dauntless. ![]() ![]() The group is faced with distractions that could lead their mission off course, battles and encounters with the enemy, sickness and death, and the betrayal of someone who is among their group. Both of them are haunted by past sins and seek to find redemption by joining the crusades. Rosalind of Ipsworth and Sir Randel Penigree join together to lead, train, and protect the group of children who join the mission. Courageous is about a group of men, woman, and children who travel to join the crusades with the mission to free prisoners inspired by a vision young Lady Sapphira had while praying. Valiant Hearts features strong females in traditionally male roles. Click here to read my review of book 1: Dauntless. Sleiman is the 3rd installment of her Valiant Hearts series. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments The christie affair book![]() ![]() Then acts of unspeakable cruelty kept them separated. She and the man she loved were a star-crossed couple who were destined to be together––until the Great War, a pandemic, and shameful secrets tore them apart. It began decades before, in Ireland, when Nan was a young girl. Nan’s plot didn’t begin the day she met Archie and Agatha. Soon, Nan became Archie’s mistress, luring him away from his devoted wife, desperate to marry him. In every way, she became a part of their life––first, both Christies. ![]() In 1925, Miss Nan O’Dea infiltrated the wealthy, rarefied world of author Agatha Christie and her husband, Archie. That is, the reader is to follow, live, and participate with the idea of the poem.Ĭoleridge tells of a Mariner on a ship who makes a sin against God and therefore is cursed. ![]() The “Wedding Guest” in the poem represents “everyday man” in the sense that “everyone” is to be at the marriage of the Mariner to life. The Mariner in the poem is telling his tale to a “Wedding Guest” who has no choice but to listen and to believe. The whole point of the poem is to encourage or convince the reader to believe the tale that Coleridge tells. Such creature was to bring them the wind that they needed to put power into the sails of the ship. The Mariner is supposedly responsible for the death of all of the crew on his ship because of his killing of a creature. ![]() The poem itself is about a Mariner who is telling his tale of sin and forgiveness by God to a man referred to as the “Wedding Guest.” Coleridge’s poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is written in a way that the reader is expected to temporarily allow him or herself to believe it to be able to understand it. ![]() |
